Whether you’re jetting out of town for a long weekend, taking off for a weeklong vacation in the Caribbean, or leaving for an “I-don’t-know-when-I’ll-be-back” RTW trip, the last thing you want to do is throw all of your clothing into your luggage the night before your 6am flight. Besides feeling stressed out, you’re likely to make some bad travel bag judgment calls—taking far too many “extras” and forgetting the true essentials.
Rather than putting off packing until the last second, throw yourself into the task early with these tips from Jeff, one of the avid travelers on the Eagle Creek marketing team. Here, he gives us the low-down on how to fill a bag quickly—and efficiently—at least 24-48 hours before your next adventure.
Q. What is the first thing that you do when preparing to pack for a trip?
A. I’m an activity-based traveler. I travel to fish new waters, hike new peaks, and ski new terrain. Regardless of the activity, the first thing I do is check out the weather. Once I know what the climate is going to be like in the local area, I’ll select the clothes and gear I want to take. I like to travel light so I mix and match clothes to keep things fresh. I lay out all my clothes and gear on my bed the day before and double-check my packing checklist so I don’t forget any necessities.
Q. Is it smart to buy travel-sized toiletries in advance, or is it easier to purchase these things when arriving at a destination?
A. This depends on where you are going and what type of trip you’ll be taking. I prefer to have all my necessary toiletries so I don’t have to worry about finding them once I arrive. The more time I can spend on experiencing the fun things at my destination.
Q. What’s the easiest way to make sure you’ve packed all the essentials?
A. Make a checklist and double-check it. Also, I highly recommend using the Pack-It™ System. It organizes all of your clothes and gear so you can find what you need when you need it. Pack-It Specter Cubes are a lifesaver!
Q. How far in advance do you start planning to pack? A week? A couple of days? The night before?
A. Since I’m an activity-based traveler, it depends on the sport, location and duration. If I’m not traveling to a remote location, I generally pack two nights before I leave. However, I make a checklist at least two weeks beforehand to make sure I have all of the necessary equipment.
Q. Which Eagle Creek packing accessory helps you the most when preparing for a trip?
A. Hands down, the Pack-It Specter™ Cube Set. They cubes are lightweight, translucent, and they organize all of your stuff. There’s nothing worse than digging through your whole pack in search of that one matching sock.
