Video: Safety Tips for Traveling Abroad

Eagle Creek Travel Expert, Jessica Dodson, shares her thoughts on how to say safe while traveling. Whether abroad or domestically, she’s got some quick tips to keep you and your stuff safe, while still having the time of your life.

Jessica has been all over the globe, from Kenya to Russia to Mexico and Jordan. And though safety is never guaranteed, she’s learned some great tips along the way that can help keep you—and your things—out of harm’s way. Addressing everything from planning a trip, to locking your bags, here are a few quick things to think through as you’re planning your trip and gallivanting the globe.

  • Where's your money? Depending on where you’re traveling (and if you feel like pickpocketing might be an issue) consider wearing a Money Belt or Neck Wallet under your clothes to keep your cash, credit cards, and passport out of sight. Whatever you chose, make sure it has RFID-blocking capabilities, so that tech-savvy thieves can’t steal your credit card or ID information.

  • Lose your passport? It is a nightmare, but if you’re prepared with  a copy or photo of your passport and the address to the nearest embassy, your process for getting home will be much easier.

  • Choose the right travel gear. Is it lockable? Whether a backpack or piece of luggage, there are lots of great options out there. Pick something that’s lockable so you’ve got the option. Don’t forget to pick up a TSA-approved lock, or else you risk them cutting it off before you’ve even gotten to your destination.

  • Check for government travel alerts and sign up for email alerts. This will help keep you aware of health issues or political unrest that could suddenly make your chosen destination a more dangerous place to visit.

  • Be smart and stay aware of your surroundings. If you feel unsafe in any given place, get out of there! If you don’t feel comfortable traveling alone, make sure that you travel with a friend or family member.

Nothing can ruin a vacation faster than having your money, luggage, or cash stolen, or finding yourself in a dangerous situation. Follow these tips and enjoy your travels worry-free.
