Your cell phone is one of the handiest tools for international travel out there. Here are a few great tips on how to get the most use out of your phone while you’re traveling overseas.

Traveling abroad with your smartphone has never been easier. Many cell phone carriers offer single day international data plans, usually for around $10 a day or less. Want to save even more money? Keep your phone on airplane mode, so you don’t get hit with international roaming charges. Depending on where you’re traveling, it’s usually pretty easy to find free wi-fi at hotels, cafes, and restaurants. If you have Spotify Premium, you can download music and podcasts in advance, so you don’t need to use data or Wi-Fi to get entertainment.

Another option is to pick up a local SIM card when you arrive at your destination. But be forewarned—this will temporarily change your phone number while in use, so be sure to let your friends and family know in advance if this is your plan.

There are also lots of super useful apps you can use while traveling to make your trip easier—and make sure you don’t get lost! There are also great apps for figuring out currency exchange rates, like MyCurrency. And Google Translate is amazing for breaking the language barrier. And be sure to clear off space on your phone so you can take tons of pictures and videos, or create a digital travel journal.

But your phone won’t be of much use if it isn’t charged! Make sure to stash an international adapter in your carry-on bag to keep your battery full. And it can be super helpful to keep your phone and other travel tech in a small organizing pouch within your purse or backpack so you always know where to find it.

As useful as your phone may be will traveling, remember to put it down as much as you can and fully experience your destination !
