Quiz: What's Your Packing Personality?

Quiz: What's Your Packing Personality?

There are as many packing styles as there are destinations on the departures board at JFK. But with 40 years of experience, the experts at Eagle Creek have boiled packers down to just three basic personalities. Ready to find out which overhead bin you belong in?

1.     What kind of bag are you using?

A.     A carry-on full of Pack-It Packing Organizers.

B.     Either my trusty old duffel or my brand new Tarmac AWD 26, depending on the trip.

C.    The gear bags of all gear bags, the ORV Trunk 30

2.     Do you carry-on or check?

A.    Carry-on all the way! Don’t you know how many minutes are wasted waiting at baggage claim?

B.     I carry on for weekend trips, but reluctantly check a bag for longer journeys.

C.     What’s a carry on? I fly Southwest exclusively, so I can always check two bags free!

3.    How quickly can you get through airport security?

A.    With efficiency— George Clooney, Up In The Air-styleTSA Pre-check? Check. Security approved Silicone Bottle Set? Check. Checkpoint Friendly laptop compartment? Check.

B.    I try to get through as quickly as I can, but get slowed down fumbling with my laptop and liquids.

C.    Let’s just say you don’t want to be behind me if you’re running late for your flight. And hey, since when do we have to take our shoes off when we’re going through the metal detector?

4.     You just landed and you’re eager to fit in a run before sunset. You get to your hotel room and have 10 minutes to get changed and leave again. How long would it take you to nab the T-shirt you mentally picked out in the cab?

A.    Ten seconds. Just enough to grab the color-coded Pack-It Cube that I stored my workout gear in.

B.    Five minutes. Everything was neatly folded, but I couldn’t remember where exactly in my bag I put my T-shirts.

C.   The full 10 minutes—as long as it took to throw every single thing in my bag onto the floor and poke around.

5.     When do you start packing?

A.    About a week prior to departure for a big trip.

B.    A day or two before the trip.

C.   An hour before take-off.

6.     You hit a fantastic market on your travels and stock up on great souvenirs. How do you get them home?

A.    Put them in my spare Eagle Creek Packable, packed just for this occasion.

B.    Stuff them into my suitcase so that I can barely zip it, and/or pawn them off on my travel partner to drive into the corners of their suitcase.

C.   Pay the mailing fees to send them to myself.

7.     How much have you spent on excess baggage fees in the past year?

A.    Not a single cent! Though, I have had to pick up underwear halfway through a trip after getting a little too carried away with packing light…

B.    I’ve had to pony up for an extra checked bag on a few trips.

C.   I fly Southwest so checked baggage is free. But if I didn’t, enough to pay for a weekend getaway to The Bahamas.

Mostly Cs: Overpacking and Overwhelmed

If you answered mostly Cs, you’re overpacking. But don’t worry, there is a cure. Eagle Creek’s thoughtfully designed and crafted luggage and packing organizers can help you pack more efficiently. By starting early, creating a detailed list, and challenging yourself to pack smarter will save you tons of stress, not to mention a chunk in excess baggage fees.

Mostly Bs: Getting There

If you answered mostly Bs, you’re on the right track, but you could use a little nudge towards being a more productive packer. Scrutinize your packing list for items that could be eliminated, or pieces that could do double duty. Don’t be afraid to invest in a few key organizational pieces that will make navigating the airport more pleasant.

Mostly As: Organized Adventurer

If you answered mostly As, kudos—you’re quite the packing superstar! You’re an organizational mastermind with the full armory of  travel accessories necessary to fly through transit and keep time spent in front of your suitcase to a minimum. Just be careful not to take your ultralight packing too far, lest you’ll be trolling for a toothbrush upon arrival!
