On my recent trip through Central Europe, the backpack, purchased in June of 2008, performed well. Yet after I had been using the small detachable backpack separately in driving rain, I found to my surprise a half a centimeter layer of water inside on the bottom, making wet everything inside (fortunately I had put most things, such as my camera, in ziploc bags). I have not been able to find out what had leaked. Based on my thirty years of trekking experience, I would have expected a better performance.

I'm not a big complainer, and I think that because this bag is SO BIG, it's almost excusable. Still, you should know that on my very first trip with the bag, the shoulder straps tore off. And, even though I'm a pretty active young person, a 23 year old athlete even, my back was also killing me by the end of the month and a half...I think the best idea would be to simply underpack with a smaller bag.

The bag spent 2 months in Africa through dust, dirt, grime, it was sat on, tossed, pushed, pulled - and it still looks like new! Absolutely excellent bag. Very large, but not cumbersome. Really like that the straps can be zipped up and put away when checking the bag onto an airplane.
