Travel Goods Association Honors Eagle Creek With Community Service Award

March 19, 2005

Companywide efforts to feed the hungry, fight fires, help homeless and battered women, and support overseas causes in destinations where its customers journey has earned Eagle Creek the Travel Goods Association's annual 2005 Community Service Award.

TGA's distinguished Community Service Award is given "In special recognition for your continuing and significant community service contributions."  Eagle Creek Executive Vice President Ricky Schlesinger received this year's award on behalf of the company at the TGA Travel Goods Show on March 19, 2005, in Orlando, Fla.

"The spirit of an organization is really driven from the top.  Our founder Steve Barker is truly behind our commitment to community efforts," said Schlesinger.  "We believe in 'karma,' meaning what goes around comes around.  We make very specific and, we hope, meaningful choices about how we support our communities and the places our customers visit."

As an example of the personal leadership of Eagle Creek founders Steve and Nona Barker concerning community service matters, each has served as volunteer firefighters in California's North County for more than ten years.  The Barkers also personally participate in community food drives.

With more than a 20-year legacy of giving back to the communities it serves, Eagle Creek began the first quarter of 2005 with "Gimme Shelter," an innovative, national wheeled luggage public collection program that directly benefits those who are in homeless and/or domestic violence situations.  During the month of March 2005, more than 180 U.S. dealers are collecting previously owned wheeled luggage that will then be given to nearly 100 shelters within participating retailers' local communities.

Gimme Shelter follows on the heels of Eagle Creek's successful December 2004 companywide food drive.  In its 10th year, the annual Eagle Creek food drive and eBay silent auction resulted in approximately 35,000 pounds of food and thousands of dollars being donated to San Diego's North County Food Bank.  The food drive, which exceeded the gear innovator's 25,000-pound goal, helped the Food Bank serve nearly 100,000 families in need during the holidays.

Other notable programs supported by Eagle Creek include Children of Nepal and Medicines Global.  Eagle Creek also recently donated 1,000 backpacks to under-privileged children in the San Diego region.
