Your Perfect Mexico Vacation
With 31 diverse states, Mexico as a country has a lot to offer. We’re sharing insights on where to go and have the perfect vacation!
As Mexico expert Craig Zabransky says on his blog Stay Adventurous, Mexico is a place “where you can find wineries to tequila distilleries, beautiful beaches to majestic mountains, tropical jungles to forests, caves to cenotes, ancient ruins to modern art, mariachi bands to Mayan mysteries, and colonial pueblas to cosmopolitan cities.”
Sounds amazing, right?
Mexico is an ideal destination for the traveler seeking a vacation. Yet the media is constantly full of reports that would suggest the country is unsafe to travel to. Don’t let fear keep you away, the perfect Mexico vacation can still be had if you go to the right places.
So, where do you start? Cancun is the major gateway to the Riviera Maya, one of the most beautiful areas of the country. Head south from the airport, along the ocean to stay at the sustainable all-inclusive resort Hacienda Tres Rios, near Playa Del Carmen, which won the prestigious Green Globe certification. Plan to snorkel in one of the cenotes followed by a kayak trip to the ocean and a Temazcal or “Sense Adventure.” Make sure to leave time during your stay to enjoy a night in the town with a dinner at Yaxche and a fire show on the beach. If you’re seeking history, art and unspoiled beaches, travel even further south to the white beaches and Mayan ruins of Tulum which Beers and Beans recommends as, “a sight you should not miss.”
Instead of staying in the capital of Mexico City, consider Michocan, or San Miguel de Allende. All are within easy driving distance, but are safer and accessible for the casual visitor. Michocan has lush forests and mountains, and the town of San Miguel, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is charming and colonial, full of history and cobblestone streets. Stay at Casa de Sierra Nevada to enjoy a utopian and luxurious experience.
Another option is to enjoy privacy and close proximity to nature when you fly into Mazatlan and then take a day trip to Goat, Deer or Stone Island to snorkel or do nothing more than drink cervezas on the beach. These islands are included in a nature reserve of 900+ islands in the Sea of Cortez that are protected by UNESCO status.
If learning to surf in Mexico is on your bucket list, Puerto Escondido in Oaxaca was recently rated as the country’s best surf spot. Try your hand at the Mexican Pipeline while in town and relax in the evenings when you stay at Hotel Aldea del Bazar.
Cabo San Lucas often steals all the attention of visitors to the Baja Peninsula, for good reason, but you can also visit nearby San José del Cabo if you're looking for a less raucous experience without sacrificing quality. Try a stay at the all-suite Casa Dorada, rent the private Casa Mariposa, or experience the swanky hideaway that is One&Only Palmilla.
By visiting any of these gorgeous locations, your trip to Mexico will be both safe and relaxing. Enjoy!
