Labor Day Long-Weekend Getaways

Labor Day Long-Weekend Getaways

Itching to get out of town for one last summer trip, but you’re not sure where to go? Take advantage of the extra time off by checking out one of these top four long-weekend destinations.

Whether you’ve accidentally let summer slip away without taking a single trip, or you want to add one more excursion to a season filled with travel, Labor Day weekend is your last chance for a summer vacation. Pack your bags and check out one of these long-weekend escapes for your holiday weekend.

If you're traveling with kids: San Antonio, TX

What to do: For a dose of history, visit the Alamo and the San Antonio Missions National Historic Park. The kids will love panning for gold at the Natural Bridge Caverns and walking through the caverns with headlamps. Pack up for a day filled with outdoor activities in Texas Hill Country, which include hiking and biking through Government Canyon State Natural Area and floating down the Guadalupe river on inner tubes.

Where to stay: If you're splurging, check into the Hyatt Regency Hill Country Resort and Spa. For those on a budget, try the Best Western Plus Sunset Suites.

If you want to catch some last-minute rays: Block Island, RI

What to do: Relax on the miles of public, white sand beaches on this tiny island just off the state of Rhode Island. Pack the ultimate beach bag for a day of swimming at Crescent Beach and body boarding at Manson Beach. Indulge in a lobster roll—or a whole lobster at that—since this New England town boasts top-notch seafood. Just remember, the ferry stops running after Labor Day, so plan your trip accordingly!

Where to stay: Block Island is known for its B&Bs, such as the Seabreeze. If you are more comfortable in a hotel, check into the 1661 Inn and Hotel Manisses.

If you need a romantic getaway: Sonoma, CA

What to do: Drink wine, of course! Just north of San Francisco and miles away from its more famous counterpart, Napa, Sonoma is home to top-rated wineries that serve drinks at lower price points. Take a walk down First Street and sample local wines in tasting rooms, or venture out to the wineries for a glass with a view of the stunning Northern California vineyards. Enjoy live music and more, Labor Day weekend happens to be Sonoma Wine Country Weekend, the sixth annual series of wine-related events that help raise money for charities in the county.

Where to stay: Splurge on the Ledson hotel in the center of Sonoma, or save your money (so you can spend more on wine!) at the Sonoma Valley Inn.

If you're in search of fresh air: Adirondack Mountains, NY

What to do: Take a break from the summer heat and hit the Adirondacks just as the peak temperatures begin to drop. At this time of year, it’s still warm enough to take a dip in one of the serene lakes, but it’s plenty cool to hike through one of the picturesque trails. Though peak "leaf-peeping" season isn't until mid-September and most trees will still be green, you might catch a few trees in transition.

Where to stay: Treat yourself to a few nights in a cabin or room at the luxurious Lake Placid Lodge or connect even more with the great outdoors (and save cash) by setting camp in a park campground.
