Italy may be most famous for making this tasty treat, but you can find top-notch gelaterias in four other countries across the globe.

Italy is the undisputed gelato capital, but it’s not the only place to get your fix of the creamy, luscious dessert. Finding the best gelato outside Italy is easier than you may think, thanks to the worldwide attention given to participants in the Firenze Gelato Festival in Florence and the Gelato World Championships—both of which feature acclaimed international gelato makers. For a delicious cone or cup outside of Italy, visit these four gelaterias across the globe.

Bella Gelateria: Vancouver, Canada

Vancouver has a strong culinary reputation, and one of the city’s standout places to eat is Bella Gelateria. Owner James Coleridge studied at Carpigiani Gelato University in Italy, learning the old-fashioned method of making gelato from scratch rather than with industrial machines. The extra effort and attention to detail paid off when his creations won two gold medals at the 2012 Firenze Gelato Festival. Bella Gelateria offers a wide range of flavors, including Tahitian vanilla, organic Thai coconut milk, and black sesame.

Gelato Boutique: Sao Paulo, Brazil

Pastry chef Marcia Garbin studied the art of making gelato in Italy and then moved to Brazil, taking with her the goal of bringing authentic Italian gelato to South America. She was named an “emerging gelato maker” at the Firenze Festival and was praised for her natural gelato that is made from fresh, local ingredients. She even purchased two handcrafted gelato carts from Italy, so she could display her products the traditional way. The next time you go to Sao Paulo, make sure to check out Garbin’s specialties, which include chocolate and passion fruit.

Il Gelato Hawaii: Honolulu, Hawaii

Il Gelato Hawaii has served its unique haupia coconut and mango sorbetto flavors to both President Obama and the Dalai Lama during their visits to the state. Other creative flavors at the shop include hazelnut gorgonzola, pineapple mint, and chai chocolate. Founder Dirk Koeppenkastrop is a German with a PhD in physical chemistry from the University of Hawaii and will be one of five representatives of the United States at the 2014 World Gelato Championships.

Fenocchio: Nice, France

One of the top non-Italian gelato spots in Europe is Fenocchio, which has been going strong since 1966. The family-owned business, which is run by the husband and wife team of Francis and Giselda, offers 94 varieties of gelato, including fruity options like melon, pear, apricot, sour cherry, and grapefruit, as well as more unusual flavors such as cactus, chewing gum, rosemary, thyme and tomato basil. In addition, the business is known for its cold cakes and tiramisu.
