8 Binge-Worthy Television Shows For Your Next Trip
No matter where your next trip takes you, these 8 marathon-worthy television shows will help the travel time fly by.
There is nothing more relaxing than watching the scenery or clouds pass by through a car or airplane window—for the first five minutes of a trip, that is. After that, the landscape loses a bit of its luster, and relaxation gives way to travel boredom. But if you come prepared with a laptop or tablet that's loaded with a TV series to binge watch, you'll be entertained for hours.
In order to have the perfect on-the-go binge-watching experience, you first need to remember a few key rules.
- Be aware of your surroundings. In other words, don’t tune into anything that's too graphic for younger passengers who may be nearby.
- Get comfortable. Snuggle up with a cozy travel blanket, set up your screen directly in front of you (instead of at a downward angle, to prevent an aching back), and employ a lumbar pillow for extra support. (If you need a break from your TV binge, get some sleep while wearing the Sandman Eyeshade.)
- Plan ahead. Remember that while streaming services like Netflix might be perfect for your final destination, they’re not typically supported by the in-flight internet and will drain your data on a car trip. Download your shows ahead of time to guarantee you can watch them in transit.
Looking for some entertainment inspiration for your next long haul? Look no further.
For a Cross Country Road Trip
Give yourself a healthy dose of Americana by watching the critically acclaimed series Friday Night Lights. This drama—based on the book and movie of the same name—follows a fictional high school football team in Texas after its quarterback suffers a devastating injury. Within no time, you'll be muttering the show's pump-up catchphrase: Clear eyes, full hearts, can't lose.
Itching for something with a little more danger and suspense? Set during the Cold War, The Americans is less Americana, more spy thriller. This series, which is centered around two undercover Russian KGB agents, is full of cliffhangers and twists that will keep you on the edge of your seat.
Where you can find them: All 76 episodes of Friday Night Lights are available for download on iTunes and Google Play. The first four seasons (52 episodes total) of The Americans are also available on iTunes and Google Play.
For a Foodie Tour
Warning: Do not binge watch these while hungry! Pack some snacks before you turn on Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations. The renowned chef’s documentary series visits locations on just about every continent (excluding Antarctica), and hits up culinary gems in each place.
Once you arrive at your destination (or if you’re looking for inspiration for your next foodie tour), stream Chef’s Table. The various episodes focus on world-renowned chefs and what inspires them to create their signature dishes.
Not quite sure which country you’ll wake up in tomorrow? The folks on The Amazing Race can relate. Get some adventure travel inspiration from this long-running reality competition series, which just about circumvents the globe each and every season.
Or get an up-close glimpse of the world with Planet Earth, the BBC nature documentary. Think of it as a National Geographic magazine subscription come to life.
Where you can find them: All 28 seasons (and counting) of The Amazing Race are available for download on iTunes and seasons 25 through 28 are available on Google Play. All 11 episodes of Planet Earth are also available on iTunes and Google Play.
Big City Adventure
If it’s your first time to New York City, you share that in common with the ever-quirky Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. Stream the show once you arrive at your Big Apple hotel or vacation rental, and take solace in the fact that you’re far from as gullible as the wide-eyed, hayseed Kimmy.
Need a show that you can watch on the way there? 1990s sitcoms were borderline obsessed with New York, and you can’t go wrong revisiting Central Perk and the crew on Friends.
Where you can find them: You can stream the first two seasons of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt on Netflix, and season three is scheduled for a 2017 release. Meanwhile, a whopping 236 episodes of Friends are available for download on iTunes and Google Play.
